This old book was imported to Washington state by M. H. Hisken of
Seattle. The cover is in terrible shape, both are broken, one is
held on with tape, the other totally off. The interior contents are
held together with a cord.
The contents are what matters and they are wonderful. The are
minitures by Hiroshige, titled the 53 Sceneries of Tokaido and are
from the famous Ho-Edio edition of 1834. They were printed by
Takamizawa's Print. The book has the complete set of 55 woodblocks.
The front of the book has an index with the names of each
woodblock and the back of the book has a map with the areas that
these prints depict, unfortunetly it is in Japanese. The prints are
mounted on brown paper that is slit to hold the corners. The prints
are in excellent condition, some are yellowed from age, some are
bright. None have tears or damage. They are 5 5/8" by 3 1/2". The
size of the book is 9" by 6 1/4".
I had a terrible time trying to decide which ones to take pictures
of. This is a hard to find book, I couldn't find it on Bookfinders
of Abe Books. The artist Ando-Hiroshige was born in 1797, started
painting when he was 10, and was a famous artist of the Ukiyoye
School.
